Syllabus

HONORS ENGLISH 11

 

Purpose of Course:

            The purpose of this course is designed to introduce the student to a variety of authors from around the world. Literature, culture and history will be covered through discussion, research, lecture, group work and individual processes. The student will read and analyze a variety of poems, prose and drama to increase their appreciation for multi-cultural authors.

 

Materials:

The Language of Literature: World Literature text

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

The Book Seller of Kabul by Åsne Seierstad

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

 

Students must have the following for the start of the school year:

A three-ring binder divided up into six separate sections.

  1. DOL- Corrections
  2. Grammatical Skills
  3. Vocabulary
  4. Notes
  5. Handouts
  6. Homework (returned)

 Grading

Daily assignments: These assignments may range from bell work activities to notebook checks, to in-class reading assignments.

 

Homework: Your readings and assignments are all done outside the classroom. No class time will be given for assignments.

 

Research Papers: During the first ten weeks of this course, the student will be completing two papers. Failure to complete either of these papers will result in a failing grade for the first quarter.

 

Tests/quizzes: Quizzes will be given throughout the semester; these are often unannounced.

 

Research projects/group work: You will be required to work as a member of a team. This includes being cooperative and a leader within a group for a variety of projects.

 

Participation: It is imperative that you participate in class. Participation is one of the defining factors that determine citizenship during report cards. In order to receive a 1, you must actively participate in class. In other words, come to class, ask questions and actively involve yourself in the class.

 

Please be aware that this is an advanced college prep class and will progress at a faster pace than other English 11 classes. It is your responsibility to keep up with the readings and assignments.
